NEWSWelcome to San Marcos High School Instrumental Music! Due to the pandemic, Band will be operating differently than normal during the 2020-21 school year. We won’t be able to travel and perform in our usual competitions. However, we are offering a full program that aims to be a combination of remote learning and in-person instruction (when allowed). Please read our Q&A for answers to your questions, and feel free to reach out to us at the emails listed at the bottom of this page if you have any questions.
Will San Marcos High offer any music classes this year? Yes, music classes will be offered in both the Fall and Spring terms. The Band program will begin in “Remote Learning” mode and will move to a “Hybrid” or “Fully Open” school model when approved by the Santa Barbara Unified School District. What are the class offerings? Fall Semester: Concert Band which will include Percussion and Guard members who wish to join and receive instruction (2nd period), and Jazz Band (5th period) Spring Semester: Marching Band (2nd period), Winter Percussion (2nd period, dual enrollment with Marching Band), Winter Guard (2nd period, dual enrollment with Marching Band), Jazz Band (3rd Period), and Pit Orchestra (5th period, dependant on the scheduling of a spring play) Note: SMHS’s band classes will be synchronized with Dos Pueblos and Santa Barbara High School so that we have the same CIF sports and music “seasons” and can participate in joint activities when possible. How do I enroll in a music class? If you are already signed up for any of the classes listed above, your counselor will automatically move you into the appropriate periods and terms. If you would like to add one of the classes above, please contact your counselor. Are there auditions or prerequisites? There will be informal auditions for Jazz, Color and/or Winter Guard, and Winter Percussion. The auditions will be held for sectional placement. Participation in Pit Orchestra is by invitation. Jazz Auditions will be held in early September. Please contact Mr. Kiyoi to arrange a time or for further details. What if I don’t have my own instrument or guard equipment? San Marcos High plans to provide an instrument or practice equipment to all students for use at home during remote learning phases. Please contact Mr. Kiyoi if you are enrolled in a class and need to arrange for the pick up of an instrument or piece of equipment. Will anything fun be happening this year? This will be a highly unusual school year, but Mr. Kiyoi and the Band Boosters are committed to sponsoring unique experiences. In addition to remote class time, we hope to meet off-campus for optional small group, socially-distanced practice sessions to rehearse and eventually learn a spring show or series of music pieces. We are currently collaborating with the other local high schools to plan an outdoor Marching Band Showcase and possible outdoor band ensemble performances for the spring (if allowed), and we also hope to create professionally produced sound and video recordings of our ensembles this year. We will take advantage of every opportunity to play music together while still observing safe practices. Will I get to hang out with other Band members? Of course! Whether we meet online or in-person, Mr. Kiyoi assigns student leaders to help newer band members get to know everyone in the Band program. Whenever possible, we will plan in-person events that meet health and safety guidelines. Either way, we’re committed to helping students enjoy being a part of the Band experience. Will I be able to perform? Yes, both through remote learning platforms and hopefully in person, depending on health and safety guidelines. We already have several ideas in development, including showcases, videographed shows, and more! Is there anything exciting or new going on with San Marcos High Band? This fall, the Band will receive brand new Marching Band uniforms, replacing our current uniforms that are more than 20 years old. This year’s class will be the first to wear San Marcos High’s new look! Will the Band be able to travel to competitions and festivals? Due to the pandemic, it is unlikely we will travel out of the local area this school year. During a normal year, we typically travel throughout Southern California to attend competitions. Every four years, the Band takes a group music trip. How much does Band cost? The Band Boosters raises approximately $90,000 every year to cover all costs not paid for by the school district including additional instructor salaries, professional memberships, music and design, uniforms, instruments and equipment, and any local and regional transportation costs for our students and equipment. Even during the pandemic and with a reduced budget, the Band will continue with fundraising to pay our expenses. Your participation in band fundraising is critical to the support of our program, however, all donations are voluntary. More questions? You can reach Mr. Kiyoi at [email protected] or the Band Boosters at [email protected]. We're very thankful for the longtime support of the Santa Barbara Bowl Foundation
