Frequently asked questions
"How do I join?"
Contact Mr. Kiyoi in room M-1 or email at [email protected]
No experience is necessary! We will accept students with little or no musical/dance experience.
"How many bands can I join?"
You may participate in as many ensembles as your schedule permits.
During the Fall:
During the Spring:
"Do I get academic credit for all the bands?"
Yes, you receive credit for all ensembles you participate in.
“What ensembles count for PE credit?”
Two years of Marching Band will fulfill all your PE requirements.
"What does it cost?"
By law we are not allowed to charge "pupil fees" to participate (other than those allowed by law such as food and transportation to field competitions). However, there are many expenses for each program not paid for by the Santa Barbara Unified School District, and the San Marcos High School Royals Band Boosters help to raise money to pay for these additional costs. Money is typically donated by families or acquired through various fundraisers. Each family is highly encouraged to donate as much as possible and participate in these fundraisers to help support our students.
"What is the time commitment?"
The time commitment varies depending on the program. Most of the time is spent during school hours. Please see the schedules for each program listed on the Fall or Spring pages.
"What do colleges think of band on a resumé?"
Colleges are looking for students that are fully dedicated to one or two activities outside their academic obligations. This includes any performing arts, athletics, or school clubs. Being a member of any instrumental or colorguard ensemble for four years looks very good on college applications and will help separate you from the students who participated in no activities or jumped around multiple activities for short periods of time. Being involved in these programs shows colleges that you are dedicated, have learned to work with other students, are disciplined, know how to set/achieve goals and have an activity that you are passionate about.
